Mrs. Kate Burden-Chen
I have been working in education for 14 years. I graduated from the University of Bristol with a degree in English and Drama and initial worked in theatres in the UK. I then trained to become an ESOL teacher and in 1998 came out to Huangshan, China with VSO (Voluntary Services Overseas) to work in a teacher training college (my students went on to become primary and middle school teachers). I have stayed in teaching and teacher training ever since and have gone on to take 3 other teaching qualifications, 2 at masters’ level and 1 in e-learning/training. I have taught and worked in schools, colleges and universities. I worked for a total of 10 years for EF Education in various roles - both in China and the UK - including teacher, manager, teacher trainer and Academic Director of a chain of 30 schools for adult learners. I have also been teaching on ESOL teacher training courses at degree and masters level for 7 years.
After the birth of my 2nd son I took some time off and worked as a supply teacher in International Schools. I chose to come back to the classroom as that is the place I most enjoy and feel that I can make a difference and impact on students' lives. My teaching philosophy is to engage children, enable a safe and positive environment learning environment and to teach the 'whole child', with an emphasis on self-esteem, learning to learn as well as ensuring key academic knowledge and skills.
This year I am embarking on yet another masters' level teaching course so that I can further hone my skills and expertise as well as continue with my own life-long learning.
