Ancient Civilisations: China, Egypt, Greece and Rome
By the end of the unit students will:
Begin to understand the nature of historical enquiry and how aretfacts are used to gather information about a previous way of life.
Use a range of information to ask and answer questions about events related to Chinese, Egyptian, Greek and Roman times.
Recognise that these time periods were a long time ago.
They will:
Explore key events in the civilisations history.
Research and find information about daily life/key events and cultural aspects.
Appreciate some of the unique features of each civilisation e.g. The Pyramids, The birth of the Olympic Games, The might of the Roman Army, 4 key Chinese inventions.
Key Vocabulary:
· words and phrases relating to historical enquiry and objects from history e.g. artefact, ancient, civilisation, empire
· words associated with the passing of time, eg Roman, Anglo-Saxon, period, a long time ago
· words associated with the Roman way of life, eg hypocaust, forum, basilica, mosaic, chariot, army, troops, legion
Skills:
Students should be able to:
· Ask questions that can be answered by looking at artefacts
· Make observations and developing reasoning based on evidence
· Draw conclusions.
March-April The Environment
By the end of the unit students will:
Have an understanding of the environmental effects of waste products and make suggestions on how to reduce, recycle and reuse objects and materials that we throw away.
They will: Explore what people throw away.
Learn how rubbish is collected and where it ends up.
Develop ideas to reduce, recycle and reuse and present this information in a unique way.
Key vocabulary:
words and phrases:
· relating to the environment/environmental impact e.g. environment, garden, climate, habitat, region, area etc. . fumes, air, ozone, pollution, contaminates, waste, global warming, emission
· associated with reducing, recycling and reusing and objects that can be RRR e.g. reduce, recycle, reuse, rubbish, litter, waste, renew, sustainable, ecological footprint
associated with waste e.g. landfill, compostwords describing materials and properties and changing states e.g. plastic, glass, durable, recyclable, decay
Skills:
Students should be able to:
· Identify litter as a problem and ways to RRR waste.
· Communicate ideas effectively to a range of audiences
Investigate waste produced in the classroom/school and its impact in the broader community
