Science @nd Semester
March Light and Shadows
By the end of this unit, students should understand:
- how shadows are formed
- that shadows are in the shape of the object blocking the light
-that light travels from a source in straight lines
- that shadows change throughout the course of the day.
- that the position of a shadow is dependent on the direction of the light source.
- that translucent and opaque materials form shadows and transparent ones do not.
Students should be able to:
- measure and record the length of shadows
- use data to draw conclusions
- Decide what equipment and materials to use. Make simple observations
April/May Rocks and Soils
By the end of this unit, students should understand that:
- rock is beneath the surface of the Earth
- Different rocks have formed in different ways
- rocks have different characteristcs
- some rocks are harder than others
- some rocks are permeable
- rocks have different uses depending upon their characteristics
- pebbles and stones are small pieces of rocks
- soil covers the rocky surface of the Earth
- soil is a mixture of particles
- soils have different characteristics
-water drains through some soils faster than others
Students should be able to:
-make careful observations and measurements
- collect evidence and decide how good it is
- use their evidence to decide what they found out
May/June Magnets and Springs
By the end of this unit, students should understand that:
- force acts in particular directions
- forces can make things change shape
-there are forces between magnets
-magnets attract some materials
-there are forces in springs when they are compressed or extended.
Students should be able to:
- make careful observations and measurements
-collect evidence and decide how good it is
- use their evidence to describe what they found out
